twin towers collapse Claims for September 11th Victims Compensation Fund must be filed by October 12An important deadline is approaching for people diagnosed with cancer related to exposure to toxins at Ground Zero at the in New York City, at the Pentagon, or in Pennsylvania on September 11, 2001, following the terrorist attacks and plane crashes at those sites. In order to file a claim with the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund, individual must register with the fund by October 12, 2014.

Patients who have been diagnosed with mesothelioma as a result of exposure to asbestos on 9/11 and in the days, weeks and months following are eligible to file a claim. This includes and those who lived and worked in proximity to the crash sites.

The compensation fund, which was originally established in 2001 and operated until 2004, was reactivated as part of the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act of 2010 (Zagroda Act), which was signed into law by President Obama on Jan. 2, 2011. It will provide compensation for any individual, or a personal representative of someone who has died, who suffered physical harm or was killed as a result of the terrorist-related aircraft crashes of Sept. 11, 2001, or in the debris removal efforts that took place in the aftermath of those terrible events.

In addition to the Victims Compensation Fund, the Zagroda Act also established the (WTC) Health Program. The WTC Health Program, which is administered through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, provides medical monitoring and treatment for emergency responders, recovery personnel, cleanup workers and volunteers who helped after the terrorist attacks. Although it is called the WTC Health Program, it also is open to anyone affected by the attacks on the , the Pentagon, or the crash site near Shanksville, Penn.

It has been reported the toxic dust cloud that covered Lower Manhattan after the collapse of the Twin Towers contained such hazards as asbestos, cement, gypsum, glass fibers, lead and other heavy metals. The WTC Health Program will also provide medical screening and evaluations for eligible people who were exposed to the toxic dust cloud in New York by simply working, living, or attending school or daycare in the area in the months following the buildings’ collapse.
